EXPERTS CRY:  STOP BUILDING SKYSCRAPERS IN PARIS!
Parisians among 49 experts arguing that Paris towers are unsustainable, incongruous, and unneeded

NEW YORK and PARIS. Disregarding polls and lawsuits showing that Parisians oppose skyscrapers and other modernist buildings, Paris City Hall has begun building mammoth towers on the outskirts of the City of Light. In a new book from the International Coalition for the Preservation of Paris (ICPP) called Paris Without Skyscrapers, launching in April 2021, 49 experts in fields from architecture to economics to sustainability show that these skyscrapers are catastrophically incongruous, unsustainable, and unneeded. They issue a call to the world to aid Parisians in defeating developers and politicians’ self-serving campaigns to attack beauty as a standard and to “modernize” Paris and other cities worldwide. Architect and co-founder of the New Urbanism Andres Duany says in his foreword, “This book shatters the myth that Paris will always be beautiful.”

This path-breaking book assembles in one place for the first a full range of arguments – social, economic, aesthetic, and environmental – against the plague of hyper-development that citizens are fighting everywhere, including even in London and New York City. It presents evidence-driven arguments from experts from all over the world, many of them Parisians. In addition to illustrations by architect and planner Leon Krier, best known as the planner of Poundbury, the new town of the Prince of Wales in Dorset, U.K., the book contains photos of proposed Paris skyscrapers. The late U.K. philosopher Roger Scruton wrote in support of this project, “To destroy the harmonious example of Paris for the sake of the antiquated and discredited doctrines of the architectural modernists would be a crime against the European idea of the city.”

The International Coalition for the Preservation of Paris (ICPP), SaveParis.org, is a 501(c)(3) global educational association dedicated to advancing the unique architecture and urbanism of Paris. Its board of advisors includes members worldwide, from Hyderabad to Seattle. ICPP is publishing the book in cooperation with the established French preservationist association SOS Paris, SOSParis.org.
